CMEinfo

In late 2015, I joined Oakstone’s CMEinfo brand as a video editor. A long-standing publisher in the medical educational industry, CMEinfo delivers quality medical educational content from world-renowned educators such as Harvard Medical School, NYU Langone, UCSF Imaging, UCLA, Cleveland Clinic, and many more. CMEinfo began in the early home-video days and has since evolved into a medical education streaming platform with one of the largest content catalogs in the industry. For my first six months at CMEinfo, I carefully learned the procedures of editing educational content and quickly began to incorporate my technical know-how into their workflow. Before the end of 2016, I initiated a transition to a network-based editing workflow which minimized ingestion downtime as well as implemented a seven workstation large render farm. During this time I transitioned to managing all of our department’s IT needs since our needs were vastly different from the other parts of the company. As our editing workload increased each year after, we managed to keep up by improvements in workflow and equipment updates. In 2018, we were faced with a pool of aging IT equipment and I took on the task of writing a new comprehensive IT proposal for our needs complete with 10gb networking and a dedicated media storage NAS. In 2020, with the start of our virtual conference business, I would again write another comprehensive IT proposal for the unique needs of streaming a live virtual conference. Now I manage a total of 16 video workstations, six laptops, a mac workstation, a dedicated FTP for remote work, and both online and offline media archives.

In 2017, I transitioned to handling not only post-production, but actual production as well. This involves frequent travel to capture medical lectures and content on-site at the major medical schools across the country. My production team managed to slim down our production requirements to only needing one crew member with a fly-pack, so the majority of my productions were and still are completed solo with occasional on-site temporary support for equipment setup. Traveling to the top medical schools in the US and working with field-experts became a common occurrence for my job, allowing me to build solid relationships with our providers. In 2017, I trained a crew member to do these on-location productions and in 2019, I trained another new crew member to do the same.

On March 13th, 2020, I was flying back from Boston when the US went into its first lock-down. The morale at that conference steadily declined over the week as news spread within the medical community and after my return I was seriously concerned for the long-term success of our business. After a troubling two months of decline in work, we were approached by several of our providers for “live-streaming” services. Within a month, we had developed a complete live virtual-conference platform and those providers were able to continue their long-held conferences, albeit virtually. By chance, my team and I created an entirely new business of live virtual-conferencing for medical education. After our initial success we were approached by many other medical schools for our virtual conferencing services.

Our sudden increase in demand meant our existing production crew and production equipment needed to double in size to accommodate the added production needs. In late 2020, I drafted and proposed a virtual-conference studio and in 2021 I rebuilt our formerly cobbled-together virtual production studio. Today we have capabilities of streaming up to four simultaneous virtual-conferences with redundant internet and backup power, just as a television studio would implement. In early 2021, I trained three new production staff who, like me, started with video editing. The majority of training took place virtually, because our company became remote in 2020. My training involved the creation of pre-recorded lectures and live Zoom lectures where I taught software best-practices and answered all trainee's questions. Our new staff began editing immediately and I filled in their knowledge gaps regarding the technical workings of our production process. I had the opportunity to train one of our new staff on location at a production in Orlando (my first return to an in-person conference since early 2020). In 2022, we largely returned to in-person conferences and transitioned our virtual-conference studio to be road-ready allowing us to now capture and stream conferences for a worldwide audience from any location.

While I have significant examples of my work for Oakstone’s CMEinfo and its other brands, none are legally allowed to be posted here. Please contact me for more information and examples which I would be happy to demo virtually.

The Personal Stories Project

Founded in 2012 by Charles Chan Massey and Sara Christie, the Personal Stories Project promotes activism, advocacy, and support for the LGBTQ+ community and allies through the sharing of personal stories. In 2016, Charles hired my editing services to edit a, then new, backlog of video stories to add to his collection. The following year we collaborated further and I began to not only edit, but fully produce the video stories for The Personal Stories Project. Since then I have produced numerous videos, many listed below as examples.

Freelance Endeavors

In August of 2012, my business partner and I decided to dissolve Take 3 Media and put our time into our own careers. Since then, I have still found myself taking on freelance video production, editing, and photography. Before the pandemic, a close friend and fellow graduate in my program decided to create a short film. For the production, I assisted him as focus-puller and lead sound engineer. After the main shoot, I assisted him as an editor and colorist. In Feb 2024 "The Performance" premiered at the George Lindsey Film Festival:

In 2019, I created cover artwork, website media, video essays, and social media for Harnessing Darkness, as well as photographing and videoing book signings and poetry reading across the country:

  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Blog

In 2018, I photographed Senior Pictures for a soon-to-be graduate:

In 2017, I photographed two close friends for their engagement:

In 2015, I produced and edited a wedding video for a close family friend:

iHeartMedia

In June of 2015, I joined the iHeartMedia Birmingham team working as the Digital Content Coordinator. My responsibilities included Event and Concert Photography, Social Media Management, Social Media Advertising, Video Production, Website Maintenance and Design, and other Digital Advertising. During my time at iHeartMedia, I photographed many household names including Lady Antebellum, Ariana Grande, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and more! Due to a major website overhaul and the passage of many years, most of the content I created for iHeartMedia is missing from their web and social presence. Please contact me for examples.

Unclaimed Baggage Center

In April of 2014, I joined the Unclaimed Baggage Team as the Digital Media Specialist and used my skills to digitally market the world's most iconic lost-luggage retailer. In the summer of 2014, I worked closely with two summer interns to build a bank of content and develop Unclaimed Baggage’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. In August of 2014, Unclaimed Baggage took on the task of building a new website and I was tasked with creating all new media for this website. In late September, we wrapped up the website project and launched the new site, complete with an integrated homepage video which I created. In Fall of 2014, Unclaimed Baggage had several shopping events, company-sponsored community events, holiday festivities, and the nationally-recognized Ski Sale event. During these special events, I took photos and videos that I used to craft into marketing pieces for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. In November of 2014, I attended the SoMeT (Social Media and Tourism) Conference in Nashville to expand my knowledge and skills with Social Media. In the winter of 2014-2015, I worked closely with the Marketing Director to re-brand our Instagram page, transforming it from a random assortment of images to a page with a consistent and cohesive look and feel. While at Unclaimed Baggage Center, my responsibilities included content creation and management for all Social Media, all photography and videography for marketing, video creation for specific events and marketing strategies, website media creation and updates, graphic design for in-store digital marketing on TVs, and miscellaneous digital projects (store ambient music, in-store digital signage upgrades, and photography studio upgrades). In 2020, Unclaimed Baggage opened their e-commerce store and most of my work related to their previous website is now gone; however, many examples of my work still exist on their social media posts from 2014 and 2015. Please contact me for further examples of my work with Unclaimed Baggage.

Sutherland Sight and Sound

After graduating college, I began contract work at Sutherland Sight and Sound for productions involving video and digital projection. I gained considerable experience in live HD Video and its various standards, as well as live sound and lighting. By the time I left Sutherland Sight and Sound, I had gained a comprehensible understanding of all aspects of major productions. During production off-time, I worked in the electronics repair shop at Sutherland Sight and Sound, spending my time repairing audio electronics and LED lighting. I had the privilege to work with two seasoned electronics technicians. We had two major service center contracts with QSC and with Mackie (Loud Inc.). In two years, I repaired hundreds of audio amplifiers, intelligent lights, AV equipment, DJ equipment, and home audio equipment, gaining considerable experience in surface mount electronics, schematics, and circuit diagnostics.

2012-2014

In Spring 2012, I met professional chef Kevin Kilburn and began designing media and print material with his restaurant consulting company. During my time working with him, he opened his own restaurant, Southern Farm Table, and started his catering company. In the early days of Southern Farm Table, I managed the Facebook page, designed the menu, and provided promotional photography. I created all of the menus for his catering company shortly after. In addition, I created food labels and logo designs for his consulting clients.

Take 3 Media

Take 3 Media Group was a personal entrepreneurial endeavor of mine. I worked with several partners in the past and completed a number of productions. Take 3 Media started in 2004 when I began partnering with a friend to make videos for family and locals. From there, we grew our portfolio to wedding videos, commercials, and special event videos. Throughout the history of Take 3 Media, I headed the production side of the business and served as the chief editor. I oversaw the purchases of our first HD cameras and managed our various editing software transitions. During our run, I gained skills with countless cameras, audio equipment, and dozens of software platforms. When I started film classes in college, I quickly realized my experience far surpassed anything I was being taught. In 2012, my long-time partner and I would work on our last production together, as he was beginning his career and I was exploring my career opportunities after graduation. In retrospect, Take 3 Media was probably the most educational endeavor I would ever take on. Below is a stack of freeze-frames from some of our work:

Micro Excell

After graduating high school, I began working at Micro Excell Computers and continued while attending college. Computers had been a hobby of mine since childhood, but I was finally able to make it into a full-time career (at least in the summer). During my time at Micro Excell, I gained experience in computer hardware and software repair, networking systems, laptop repair, and multi-platform experience (PC, Mac, Linux). In addition, I handled on-site repairs for personal customers as well as large corporate clients.
